Common Orthodontic Issues
Loose or Damaged Brackets
If the main wire is damaged or becomes loosened, please call our office schedule a visit so the bracket can be repaired or replaced. If you must cut the wire or slide a bracket off the wire, you can use sterilized fingernail clippers to remove it. Please be sure to wash the clippers first and then use alcohol to sterilize them.
Mouth Sores, Aches, Tooth Soreness
If the wires are causing you irritation, you can use a cotton swab to gently and carefully move the wire away from the irritated area. If the wire will not move, or you are afraid it will break, try adding a tiny piece of cotton or a small dab of wax to provide a cushion. If the wire is very painful, as a last resort carefully clip the wire off with a pair of sterilized nail clippers or scissors.
If your teeth are sore after a visit, or if you have mouth irritation and or tenderness, you can rinse out your mouth with warm saltwater twice a day. Just mix one teaspoon of table salt with eight ounces of warm water, then gently swish the water around in your mouth. You can also use a warm washcloth and or heating pad on the outside of the jaw to help relieve pain. Make sure to not fall asleep on the heating pad and do not allow it to get so hot as to cause a burn. You can also use over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol. Check with your doctor to make sure that it does not interfere with any other medication you may be taking.
Lost Separator or Loose Bands
If you lose a separator or your bands become loose, please call our office. Although it is not common, sometimes a separator can become loose during the course of treatment and it may need to be replaced. If you have any questions or concerns, we are always happy to help.
